I have subscribed to other font lists, one of them being terribly comp.font-ish. Below is a forwarded message I got today. Hotline is becoming more and more active by the day in the field of fonts. This was discussed at Typecon 98, and it is indeed a concern. Hotline sites carry a wide variety of pirated software, and a sleuth of commercial fonts wider than alt.binaries.fonts has never seen. I wonder what kind of action could be taken to try to limit the influence of such sites. Education seems to be the key, as obviously there seems to be very little legal recourse. I know from the reaction anyone can see in the newsgroups that the frontal approach does not work. It seems a lot of font pirates maybe teens, who love fonts, but ressent very much lectures. However, as they do love fonts, they probably appreciate talking about them. Would it be worth it to try to establish a presence in the hotline sites, as type designers, to try to educate visitors ? After all, we all do have sample fonts for the taking. And while people come for the free stuff, we may very well be able to pass our message. What do you think ?
